The Pentagon is stomping on Netflix for “Boots,” its new series about a closeted gay Marine recruit, calling it “woke garbage” pushing an “ideological agenda.”
Trump administration officials condemned the series, which tells the story of a closeted teen from Louisiana who joins a US Marine Corps boot camp in the 90s, when openly gay recruits were forbidden.
“Under President Trump and Secretary [Pete] Hegseth, the US military is getting back to restoring the warrior ethos. Our standards across the board are elite, uniform, and sex-neutral because the weight of a rucksack or a human being doesn’t care if you’re a man, a woman, gay, or straight,” Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly.
She added that the military “will not compromise our standards to satisfy an ideological agenda, unlike Netflix whose leadership consistently produces and feeds woke garbage to their audience and children.”
The series, starring Miles Heizer and Vera Farmiga, premiered Oct. 9 and has been consistently ranked in streaming giant’s top 10 viewership charts since.
The show made its debut roughly a week after Hegseth announced strict new personnel standards for the military — including that “dudes with dresses” were not welcome in US combat forces — and the rest must meet “male-level” fitness standards to face “life and death” situations.
“Standards must be uniform, gender-neutral, and high. If not, they’re not standards. They’re just suggestions. Suggestions that get our sons and daughters killed,” he said at the time.
